“MY NEW WIFE ALREADY GAVE ME TWO KIDS—SOMETHING YOU COULDN’T DO FOR 10 YEARS!” my ex-husband sneered when I ran into him at the clinic. He looked thrilled, then added, “So, you finally decided to check yourself?” A very pregnant woman stepped up behind him. “THIS IS LIZA, MY WIFE! WE’RE EXPECTING OUR THIRD!” His eyes screamed that he wanted to break me with the news.
Just then my husband came over with water. “Honey, who is this?” he asked, noticing my discomfort. I smiled calmly.
“Actually,” I said, “I did check myself after the divorce. Multiple specialists. There was never anything wrong with me.” My ex froze.
“We’re here for our first ultrasound,” my husband added proudly.
The color drained from my ex’s face as the truth settled in. For ten years he let me believe I was broken. I wasn’t. And as I walked away, I felt whole for the first time.
