Cleaning a toaster can be harder than it looks, especially when it’s packed with grease and crumbs from endless breakfasts. It’s easy to ignore, but a dirty toaster doesn’t just look bad — it can also affect how well it works. The good news? My nana has a simple trick to degrease it with barely any effort, and I’m sharing it with you.
No fancy products needed. The magic ingredients are already in your kitchen.
The Secret: White Vinegar and Baking Soda
These two everyday staples work perfectly together. Vinegar cuts through grease thanks to its acidity, while baking soda gently scrubs away stubborn buildup. They’re affordable, natural, and effective.
Step 1: Unplug First
Always unplug the toaster and let it cool completely. Remove the crumb tray and any detachable parts. Shake the toaster gently over a sink or trash can to remove loose crumbs. (Be careful not to damage the heating elements.)
Step 2: Wipe Away the Grease
Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water. Dip a soft cloth into the mixture and wipe the exterior, focusing on greasy spots. For tougher stains, sprinkle a little baking soda onto the cloth and scrub gently. Avoid electrical parts.
Step 3: Clean Tight Spaces
Use an old toothbrush or cotton swab dipped in the vinegar solution to clean around buttons and crevices. Soak the crumb tray in warm water with a splash of vinegar for 10–15 minutes, then scrub lightly with baking soda and rinse.
Step 4: Polish
Wipe everything down with a clean damp cloth to remove residue. Dry with a microfiber cloth for shine. If it’s stainless steel, rub a tiny amount of olive oil or baby oil along the grain to prevent fingerprints and give it a polished look.
Step 5: Dry Completely
Let all parts dry fully before plugging it back in — at least 30 minutes. Once dry, reassemble, and your toaster will look almost brand new.
