This Unusual Item Was Always a Staple on Camping Trips

There are many devices that people may have used during their youth but these days, it seems as if they are lost to time. It doesn’t necessarily mean that they are useless, in fact the opposite is often true.

The following object is something that was used for many years, and some families will still use it today. It was very popular and still continues to be popular, especially for those who enjoy camping.

In case you haven’t guessed it yet, we are looking at a vintage sandwich toaster. It has been around since the early 20th century, and there have been patents in the United States and Australia in the early 1900s. It was designed for camping at first, because you could stick your sandwich inside and then plunge the cast-iron into the coals of the fire to toast the sandwich.

Essentially, you are sealing two pieces of bread together and putting something in between. My family used to do this when we were camping and our favorite treats included making pizza sandwiches or blueberry pies. Really, you could make anything you wanted.

Eventually, electric models became more popular and they were used in many kitchens. After the war, however, people began to look for a faster way to make meals, and this item eventually disappeared.

You can still find them and they certainly do make a delicious sandwich. It’s something that you should try at least once in your life, and you may just be hooked.
