California Democrats Sen. Adam Schiff and Rep. Nancy Pelosi criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to pardon over 1,500 Jan. 6 Capitol riot defendants, most convicted of misdemeanors like trespassing. Schiff, appearing on MSNBC, called the pardons a “grotesque display” of power, accusing Trump of rewarding violence.
Schiff specifically condemned the pardon of a Proud Boys leader, expressing disbelief that Trump would pardon individuals involved in the Capitol attack so soon after assuming office. He labeled the move a troubling yet unsurprising start to the new administration.
Pelosi expressed outrage on social media, calling the pardons an “insult” to the justice system and law enforcement. She highlighted the physical and emotional trauma faced by officers during the riot, accusing Trump of abandoning their sacrifices.
Both lawmakers emphasized the importance of honoring the courage of law enforcement who defended democracy on that dark day, despite Trump’s controversial decision.
