One was a man with motor oil and beef jerky tossed carelessly on the belt. The other was a young woman in wrinkled blue scrubs, holding a single can of hypoallergenic baby formula like it mattered more than anything else in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I noticed her right away because she looked exhausted enough to fall over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cashier scanned the formula, and the nurse slid her card into the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It beeped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCard declined,\u201d the cashier said gently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The young woman blinked, clearly stunned. \u201cNo\u2026 that has to be wrong. You could actually see the humiliation hit her. Her eyes filled immediately, and she looked down at the formula like she wished she could disappear right there with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nobody said anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the ugliest part of moments like that\u2014not just the cruelty itself, but the silence that often follows.
