\u201cI want to buy silver, make jewelry, and sell it,\u201d the man replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cAnd what do you have as collateral?\u201d the banker asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what collateral is,\u201d the man said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s something valuable that guarantees the loan,\u201d the banker explained. \u201cFor example, do you have a car?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes,\u201d the man replied. \u201cA 1959 Chevrolet pickup.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The banker shook his head and asked, \u201cMaybe livestock? Do you have cattle?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI have a horse,\u201d the man answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHow old is your horse?\u201d the banker asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m not sure,\u201d the man said. \u201cHe has no teeth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Despite the unusual answers, the banker believed the man seemed honest and approved the $500 loan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some time later, the old man returned to the bank and handed the banker a stack of bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHere\u2019s the money I owe you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The banker asked, \u201cWhat will you do with the rest of your money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019ll keep it at home,\u201d the man replied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWhy not deposit it in the bank?\u201d the banker suggested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know what a deposit is,\u201d the man admitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The banker explained, \u201cYou put your money in the bank, we keep it safe, and whenever you need it, you can withdraw it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
