A man dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, a leather jacket, and jeans stands before Saint Peter at the gates of heaven. Curious, Saint Peter looks at him and asks, “Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you into the Kingdom of Heaven?”
The man confidently replies, “I’m just a taxi driver from New York.” Saint Peter checks his records, nods, and hands the man a golden robe and a staff, welcoming him inside. The taxi driver enters heaven, pleased with his reward.
Behind him, a priest eagerly steps forward, expecting an even greater welcome. He introduces himself proudly, thinking his lifetime of service will earn him a high place in heaven. However, Saint Peter only gives him a simple cotton robe and a wooden staff.
Surprised, the priest asks why the taxi driver received a grander reward. Saint Peter explains, “Up here, we go by results. When you preached, people slept. But when he drove, people prayed!”
